Albuquerque, N.M. (June 20, 2014) – Two days of play remain at the 2014 US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships after quarterfinal matches were completed today.  Of the 212 teams that began the tournament, the dreams of 56 remain alive in the Under-12 through Under-18 Boys and Girls age groups.  The Under-19 Boys and Girls final match up was decided today after the Under 19 Boys semifinals, and the final day preliminary matches for the Under 19 Girls.

Three local New Mexico teams have qualified for the next round as Under 14 Boys Rio Rapids SC 01 (NM) will play in the semifinals tomorrow while Under 19 Boys New Mexico Rush 95 (NM) and Under 19 Girls New Mexico Rush 95 (NM) will compete in their respective finals on Sunday, June 22.  The US Youth Soccer National Championship Series (State, Regional and National Championships) creates a unique environment where any team is open to compete, but only those that earn their way can progress to the next stage until the National Champion is decided.  That environment attracts scouts from universities, professional teams and U.S. Soccer National Teams looking for players that can move on to the next level of play.

Notes on today’s games

2013 Region IV Champion FC Golden State 01 defeated Eastside FC Red (WA) 4-1 due to goals from Rey Anthony Naranjo Zahran Manley and a pair from Alan Piceno. FC Golden State joins Sparta JK (UT), SJ Earthquakes 2001 Pre-Academy (CA-N) and Rio Rapids SC 01 (NM), who became the first Albuquerque, N.M. team today to win a quarterfinals match 1-0.

After a late pair of goals on day three to secure a spot in the quarterfinals, defending national and regional champions, Under 15 Boys Pateadores San Diego (CA-S) made quick work of Rush 99 (HI) 7-1 with Christopher DePetro scoring a hat trick to give him seven goals in four games. Lorenzo Nunez, Luke Wyman, Raymundo Zuniga and Michael Benito also added goals for Pateadores. Joining Pateadores in the semifinals will be Santa Clara Sporting 98 Green (CA-N), La Roca TJ (UT) and USA 99 Premier (UT).

Pateadores wasn’t the only defending  US Youth Soccer National and Region IV Champion to make a statement as two-time defending national and regional champion, Santa Barbara SC (CA-S) took another step forward to returning to nationals with a 7-0 victory over LVSA 98 Boys Red (NV). Antony Andoyan and Chairat Puengrod both had a pair of goals with Brandon Sanchez, Sahid Conteh and Dennis Cole adding goals as well. Beach FC Pena (CA-S), SC del Sol 98 Colavecchia (AZ) and TSA 98 Red (AZ) also qualified to the semifinals.

Under 17 Boys Eastside FC 96 Red defeated 2013 Region IV Champion, FC Golden State on day one, and today defeated two-time US Youth Soccer National and Region IV Champion Fullerton Rangers 96 White (CA-S) 2-1 on a late goal by Sean Bender, his second of the match. Bender’s first goal came in the 10th minute as he flicked his header past the oncoming Fullerton keeper, Keith Murphy. Fullerton responded quickly four minutes later when Under 18 United States National Team midfielder Amirgy Pineda escaped an Eastside defender on the left flank before burying a point black shot past Eastside keeper, Saif Kerawala to tie things up. That would be the only ball that got past Kerawala, as he came up huge in preventing a dangerous and daunting Fullerton attack. Bender’s head again broke the tie in the 90th minute off a cross from Logan Wood, putting a dagger in Fullerton’s quest for a third Region IV Championship.

Fullerton however is still heading to nationals due to their second place finish in the US Youth Soccer National League. Joining Eastside in the semifinals will be LVSA 97 Red (NV), who needed penalty kicks to survive Westside Timbers 96 Copa (OR), Valparaiso United FC 97 (AZ) and West Coast FC Gould (CA-S).

Local Albuquerque, N.M. team, Rio Rapids SC Red (NM) fell to Sereno 96 White (AZ) in the Under 18 Boys quarterfinals 4-1. Scott Bankofier and Cole Lenderink scored in their second straight game for Sereno while Roberto Valadez Paz added his fourth and fifth goals of the tournament to put him in a tie with Santa Barbara FC White’s (CA-S) Geoffrey Acheampong for the most goals in the group. Brian Lopez netted Rio’s only goal in the 88th minute.  BNSC Celtics (ID), Fram Premier (CA-S) and Santa Barbara will be joining Sereno in the semifinals.

The finals for the Under 19 Boys age group have been determined as both NM Rush 95 (NM) and Alum Rock PAC Tigres (CA-N) won their semifinal matchups. NM Rush won 1-0 over 95 Valparaiso United (AZ) with the lone goal being scored by Luke Lawrence.  Alum Rock defeated LVSA 95 (NV) 2-1 as Glen Gomez put Alum Rock up 1-0 in the 60th minute only for LVSA’s Sean Jenne to equalize 20 minutes later. The match seemed destined for overtime until Edwin Luna scored in the 90th minute to put Alum Rock up for good.  NM Rush and Alum Rock will face off on Sunday, June 22 with the Region IV Championship and a trip to the US Youth Soccer National Championships on the line. Whichever team does advance to nationals will have the opportunity to play for the James P. McGuire Cup, the oldest trophy in youth sports, which dates back to 1935.

In the Under 14 Girls group, defending national and regional champion Legends FC 99 (CA-S) took care of business against fellow California South team, Corinthians SC 99 (CA-S) 4-0 with goals coming from Kaylee Ramirez, Emily Knous, Vanessa Evans and Bryanna Duckett. New Mexico Rush SC 00 (NM) looked to have fortune in their favor after opponent La Roca Premier PO (UT) scored an own goal in the 53rd minute to set up a 1-1 tie, but Sammie Murdock scored the game winner five minutes later to punch La Roca’s ticket to the semifinals. Legends FC and La Roca will be joined in the semifinals by Santa Clara Sporting 99 Green (CA-N) and Exiles Black (CA-S).

2013 National and Region IV Champions Eastside FC were denied a shot to defend their region crown by Ahwatukee 99 White 1-0 in the Under 15 Girls division. Kelly Cannistra scored the game’s only goal in the 71st minute when she chested a bouncing cross by the keeper, and buried her shot into the open net. Eastside will have a shot to defend their national title at the 2014 US Youth Soccer National Championships thanks to a first place finish in the US Youth Soccer National League Blue Division.

2012 US Youth Soccer National Champions Legends FC 96 advanced to the semifinals of the Under 17 Girls age group thanks to a 5-0 victory over La Roca PO (UT). Five different Legends players scored including: Hannah Chua, Mikayla Flores, Ashlee Smith, Brittany Caserma and Madison Stark.

Also in the Under 17 Girls group, Rio Rapids SC 97 Zia ran out of time against Pride Predators 97 (CO) as Pride Predators climbed to a 2-0 lead courtesy of Alleandra Watt’s goal in the 25th minute and Madison Wiegand-Brown’s goal in the 83rd minute. Amelia Bierle gave Rio Rapids some hope with her fifth goal of the tournament in the 90th minute, but it wasn’t enough as Pride Predators advanced with a 2-1 victory. Joining Legends and Pride Predators will be San Tan 97 Legacy Red (AZ) and Juventus Avanza (CA-N).

Both local Albuquerque, N.M. teams, NM Rush 96 (NM) and Rio Rapids SC 96 (NM) had rough quarterfinal games as NM Rush lost 2-0 to NW Nationals 95 Red (WA) and Rio Rapids lost 3-0 to CLSC Elite Renneisen (CA-S).  Amanda Klep and Emily Webster had goals for Northwest Nationals and Cindy Garcia, Batavia Mata and Victoria Arrendondo scored for CLSC.

In the Under 19 Girls group, Legends FC (CA-S) already qualified yesterday after finishing off a flawless 4-0 record. NM Rush 95 became the second team to secure a spot in the finals with a 5-1 victory over Players SC (NV). Victoria Barber now holds the lead for goals scored in the group with five after scoring four against Players SC, and Brooke Eastburg added a goal as well.
